Tuesday Tutorial - 3D Shadows

My tutorial today focuses on another technique. This one is the 3D Shadows Technique and is a very easy but highly effective technique.

SUPPLIES:

Card - Wild Wasabi, Melon Mambo and Whisper White

Designer Series Paper - Beyond the Garden

Stamp set - Fabulous Florets

Big Shot - Finial Press

Ink - Wild Wasabi, Melon Mambo, Delightful Daffodil

Ribbon - Dotted Scallop Melon Mambo Grosgrain

Adhesive - Dimensionals, Snail

Markers - Delightful Daffodil, Melon Mambo

Paper Snips

Stamp-A-Ma-Jig

METHOD:

I'll deal with the easy bits first. I've made the card base from Wild Wasabi and then I have used Melon Mambo ink and one of the flowers from the stamp sets and stamped randomly on the Melon Mambo card. I then ran this piece of card through the Big Shot with the Finial Press Textured Impressions folder (I'd probably use the Perfect Polka Dots if I was doing this again). I've cut 2 pieces of the DSP and adhered them where I wanted them.

Now for the centre piece:

Stamp the stem, using Wild Wasabi on the Whisper White card stock where desired - now you can use your Stamp-A-Ma-Jig or just ensure you have a piece of scrap paper under the card so when you stamp the stem will go on the scrap and not your work surface.

Choose the flower you want to use and stamp on your SAMJ sheet and then on your piece of Whisper White card where desired.

Use 2 scraps of Whisper White and stamp the same flower again twice more. You could do one the same and choose a different flower for the second if you wanted.

Now the one stamped on the card with the stem colour the centre with Delightful Daffodil and in Melon Mambo using an aqua brush or blender pen until you get the desired effect. Try not to make the piece too wet as the card will start to ball up and come away. When you have the desired effect, colour one of the other flowers in Melon Mambo too but a lighter shade than your first flower. When this is dry, cut around it. I actually cut down some of the lines and then used my bone folder to curl up the edges a bit. Your other flower can be left as is or you can colour it.

Place a dimensional in the middle of the 2 cut flowers and add one on top of the stamped image and one elsewhere on the card.

The ribbon embellishment is made by simply cutting about twice the length of the distance you need to cover. Put adhesive all along the back of the ribbon and use your forefinger to make little pleats as you stick the ribbon in place.

You can do this with any colour really. I guess the usual colours would be black underneath and grey on the top image. So long as you have a darker image beneath the lighter image on top, I feel you still get the 3D effect. Anyway, give it a try and see what you come up with.

I've never used this technique before. It's quite an easy technique and I must make a mental note to use it more often. My interpretation of the challenge appears below:

Nautical Expedition

Here it is again, another weekend sketch. My goodness the time seems to fly by these days.
1. Take a sketch

This is another of my sketches. Fairly simple so I can fit a few photos on each page. Today I have a double page layout to share with you using the sketch above.

2. Make a layout

Just because a sketch has elements set, doesn't mean you can't mix them up a bit as I have done above. Basically the right hand page still has the same elements as the sketch, just in a different order.

Tuesday Technique Tutorial - 3D Stamping

3D Stamping

Well this is such an easy technique, I'm wondering why I haven't used it before. It's a great use for your Stamp-a-ma-jig.

SUPPLIES:

Card stock - I used Crumb Cake

Whisper White Craft Ink

Stampin' Ink Pad - Cajun Craze, Garden Green, Soft Suede

Stamp set - Creative Elements

Adhesive - Snail and Dimensionals

Stamp-a-ma-jig

METHOD:

Stamp your image using Whisper White craft ink and allow it to dry (or use your heat tool).
Line your positioning sheet up with the corner of your Stamp-a-ma-jig (SAMJ). Now ink the image you just used with dye ink (Soft Suede). Line it up with your SAMJ and stamp image on your positioning sheet.
Place the positioning sheet over the white stamped image, slightly off-center from the white image.
Place the SAMJ along the imaging sheet (see tip below)
Remove positioning sheet and line the stamp up with the SAMJ and stamp image over the white image with dye ink (Soft Suede)
Your stamped image should give the illusion of being embossed.
Finish your card

I actually stamped the flower image twice on the Crumb Cake card stock with Cajun Craze and then cut the 2 flowers out. I placed a dimensional in the centre of the bottom flower to mount the second flower on. The second flower I also cut out but cut into the leaves a bit more and then turned the edges up slightly using my bone folder.
The butterfly was stamped in Garden green ink on the Crumb Cake card and then cut out. I used a tiny stip of dimensional on the wrong side of the butterfly and turned the wings up slightly.
The sentiment piece I used my SAMJ - I stamped the label on the Crumb Cake card using Garden Green ink. I've then used Cajun Craze to stamp the sentiment. I used my SAMJ to place the sentiment exactly where I wanted it. I then cut it out as a little banner and mounted it on Garden Green card. I've used dimensionals to adhere it to the card but before that I used my bone folder to give the piece a bit of a wave effect.

Sketch, Layout and Card

I just love the Nautical Expedition designer series paper from Stampin' Up!®. Unfortunately it will be no longer available after the end of March as it's in our Summer Mini Catalogue. So, I thought I'd use it in several layouts and some cards today.
I've also branched out into designing sketches. I've done a few card ones now and today I tried my very first scrapbook page sketch. It's only simple but it's served the purpose for the photos I have.

I actually did some journalling on this page. James is down from Queensland at the moment. Now the photos were taken 3 or 4 years ago and James commented that he still owns that t-shirt and wears it.

The technique I've used here is known as aged tile. It's quite easy to do just a bit fiddley putting it all back together. You basically cut your image sheet into tiles, sponge around each tile to make it look 'aged' and then adhere it onto your card.

I hope you have enjoyed my 1, 2, 3 weekend share. It's very wet here at present and the bridge about 5kms away has flooded. So unless we want to drive around (approx. 2 hours) we're house bound. Great excuse to stay in my craft room and stamp and scrap all day. There could be more of the same tomorrow as it's not due to stop raining until maybe Monday or Tuesday.

Shaped Card - Stained Glass Technique

One of the groups I'm on swaps cards each month. They are a 1 for 1 swap. One of the challenges for February was to make a shaped card. I also decided to use a technique called stained glass with this card, just to jazz it up a bit.

Supplies:
Card - Melon Mambo and Vellum (paper weight)
Big Shot - Scallop Die and Scalloped Heart Framelits (Sizzix)
Markers - Melon Mambo, Tempting Turquoise, Old Olive, Pink Pirouette and Daffodil Delight
Ink - Versamark
Stamp set - You are loved
Embossing Powder - clear
Embossing Buddy
Adhesive
Heat tool

Method
Fold the card base and insert some copy paper for the insert. Place the copy paper inside the card base and then line it up on the die so you don't cut along the crease of your card base. By doing the 2 pieces together, you have an accurate insert which you need to hide the vellum.
Using the framelit cut a scalloped heart in the centre of the front of your card base (DO NOT cut the copy paper insert.
Take your vellum and mark very lightly with a pencil, the edges of the framelit.
Stamp your image using Versamark ink and then cover the image with Clear Embossing powder and carefully heat set.
Now on the wrong side of your vellum (the side not embossed), colour some or all of the images of the stamp using your markers.
When happy with the result, adhere the vellum to the inside front of the card base
Now insert the copy paper centre and adhere the side closest to the vellum down completely to hide the vellum piece.
Stamp or decorate the inside of the card and you're done.

Tuesday Tutorial - Emboss Resist Technique

Emboss images on light coloured card stock, then apply darker ink to make them "pop".

Supplies:

Versamark ink pad
White embossing powder
Embossing Buddy™
Heat Tool
Powder Tray, or paper to catch embossing powder
Stamps (Sea Worthy and Oval All)
Glossy White Early Espresso and Crumb Cake card stock
Mocha Morning Designer Series paper
Crumb Cake and Early Espresso Ink (darker than your card stock colour)
Sponge
Adhesive - Snail and Dimensionals
Bakers twine
Stamp-a-majig

Method

Rub Embossing Buddy over entire piece of Glossy White card stock.

Ink stamp with Versamark Inkand stamp on card stock.

Pour embossing powder over stamped image, making sure everything'scompletely covered.

Tap excess powder off. Collectremaining powder in either the Powder Pal and pour it back into the container.

Heat powder with heat tool until it melts into a shinycover. Let cool.

Sponge Crumb Cake inkover your card stock.

Cover your entire piece of card stock.

To add more depth to the stampedimages, try adding more in the same colour used for sponging.

Use a paper towel or rag to buff ink off embossed images. The embossedimages will resist the sponged ink.

Now using Early Espresso stamp the sails of the boat and cut them out (see sample above). Adhere them over the top of the original sails with dimensionals that you cut to fit.

Mount your Glossy White piece on top of the Early Espresso and put to one side.

Cut a strip of the Mocha Morning DSP

Cut a length of Bakers Twine and tie a knot in it and adhere to the back of the DSP as you can see in the sample above.

Adhere this piece where desired onto the Crumb Cake piece of card.

Using Early Espresso and your Stamp-a-majig stamp the sentiment in the bottom right corner of the Crumb Cake

Mount the stamped image piece onto the Crumb Cake and then mount it all on the Early Espresso card base.

We made this card at our team meeting last Friday. Thanks to the lovely Leonie for the inspiration and instructions.

Tutorial Tuesday Technique

I decided to combine a couple of things this week. Over at Sunny Creations and Challenges, they have a sketch challenge combined with the Faux Silk technique. You can find a tutorial on this easy technique at Splitcoaststampers.

I'm not going to repeat the tutorial you can access through Splitcoaststampers as it's quite straight forward. I will just give you a few details of how I put it all together.
After adhering the stamped and wrinkled tissue to the whisper white card I ran it through the Big Shot with a circle die to cut the centre from the Medallion. I then used a sponge dauber and melon Mambo ink to ink around the inside of the circle.
For the floral image, I cut whisper white card to the exact size of the front of the card base and used some Dotto to fix it in position and then traced around the circle, lightly with a pencil.
I used my Stamp-a-ma-jig to position the floral stamp which was coloured with markers.
I put some dimensionals around the inside of the circle so the centre looked like a frame and adhered the rest of the card to the inside front.
The sentiment is stamped and mounted using dimensionals.
The 'ribbon' is tempting turquoise mounted on whisper white with some pearls to finish.
I'll share the inside of the card with you later.

Sketch Sunday

I'm back with 1, 2, 3 Sunday. You'll notice I have re-named this post Sketch Sunday. I don't always have time to get my posts uploaded on a Saturday so it will appear sometime over the weekend (Aussie time)
One of the reasons I started doing this was to ensure I do some scrapbooking each week. I have so many photos to use in layouts. I found myself making plenty of cards however, my scrapbooking was on the back burner.
Just think, if you did a similar thing, you could do 52 layouts a year. That's lots of photos and you've used up lots of 'off-cuts' or scraps by making a card with your left over products.

This is my first try at drawing a sketch. It's a little out of proportion, but I think you get the idea.

Tutorial Tuesday - Valentine's Day

What would Valentine's Day bewithout a card? My lovely husband surprised with me a single stem rose - he'sso thoughtful. Valentine's day is not a big deal in our house but today myyounger son (twin) became engaged.

A HUGE CONGRATULATIONSto Peta and Michael.

For today's card, it's quite simplebut I will give you all the instructions.

Supplies:

Card - Very vanilla (130mm x 95mm); Pink Pirouette (150mm x 210mm makes card base); Real Red (135mm x 100mm) and Early Espresso
Punches - Pinking Hearts border and Heart
Big Shot - Scalloped Envellope and Scalloped heart Framelits
Ink - Early Espresso
Stamp set - Heard from the Heart
Ribbon - Real Red 5/8" satin
Adhesive

Method:

Take the Very Vanilla Card and punch the bottom with the Pinking Hearts border punch and then using Early Espresso stamp your sentiment at the top of the piece of card
Layer this on the Real Red card, then on the Pink Pirouette card base.
Using the Big Shot cut the Scalloped Envelope out in Early Espresso and score all the lines. Adhere the envelope together.
Wrap Real Red satin ribbon around the lower end of the envelope and tie a knot
Punch out hearts using your Heart punch and framelits (I always work in odd numbers) and adhere where desired using adhesive or dimensionals
Secure the Scallop Envelope to the front of the card, placing it on an angle.

Tips: You could fillthe envelope with more hearts, stars or small flowers. You could even put somethin chocolates in it such as After Dinner mints.

Change the sentiment and replace thehearts with balloons or another embellishment for a variety of occasions.

It's a great sketch and I used it also in my Tuesday Tutorial this week for the Valentine's Day card - you can see it in the post below. Here is the card I made for the sketch challenge

Card - Whisper White, Brushed Silver and Island Indigo

The base is Whisper White and I built the rest of the card on the Brushed Silver and Island Indigo. I actually adhered these 2 pieces of card together and ran them both through the Big Shot at the same time - it's quicker and lines up the images of the Textured Embossing folder at the same time. My sentiment piece was looking a bit plain so I added the pearls on the Whisper White but lining them up with each scallop.

On the inside, I chose to use the flower stamp from the Marry me set. I coloured them with Stampin' Write Markers, just to add a bit of interest to the inside of the card.

I liked this sketch a lot. It's easy to manipulate the pieces and could be used for many different occasions. Thanks Shirley for the sketch.

Tutorial Tuesday

Dazzling Diamond Dust

Tutorial Tuesday is back for 2012 with a new technique which was shared on SUDSOL (Simply Unique Demonstrators Sharing Online) last week If you're a Stampin' Up!® Demonstrator, you should really belong to SUDSOL - it's your 24/7 Upline.

Here's the card I made

Supplies:

Card - Whisper White & Melon Mambo

Ink - Melon Mambo. Pretty in Pink & Versamark

Stamp sets - Marry me and I {Heart} Hearts

Ribbon - Melon Mambo Grosgrain

Embossing Powder - Dazzling Diamonds

Decorative Label Punch

Adhesive

Other - Embossing Buddy, Stamp-a-ma-jig. Heat tool, Powder Pal tray, Snips.

Method

1. Using one of your inks and stamps, stamp on the Whisper White

2. Choose a different stamp (and ink if you wish) and stamp again on your card

3. Use more ink and another stamp to stamp again on your card

4. Now use your Versamark ink pad (make sure it's juicy so you get a good result) and ink all over your card. Hold it up to the light and ensure you have inked all parts of the card

5. Now the fun part. Tip your Dazzling Diamonds embossing powder over the entire surface of your card. Some people place their embossing powder in reusable rectangular containers and lie their cardstock over the powder. Which ever way you do it, ensure you get really good coverage.

6. Once you've finished that, you now need to heat set the embossing powder. Now be careful your fingers don't rub off the embossing powder or get burnt. If your Versamark ink wasn't juicy enough, you'll find some of your embossing powder flying off. It's a very pretty look in your room and for yourself with dsparkles everywhere :)

7. Now carefully cut your card to the desired size. I mounted my Whisper White on Melon Mambo. before doing that though, I used the Whisper White piece and built the layers on top before adhering to the base card. I cut a length of the Melon Mambo ribbon and adhered it down the centre of the card. Make sure you don't skimp on adhesive as it doesn't like the Dazzling Diamonds much and may come adrift.

8. Make your label sentiment piece by stamping on some scrap Whisper White. I stamped the frame first and then used my Stamp-a-majig to stamp the sentiment. I then used the Decorative label punch to punch out the sentiment

9. You can see from the photo above I have cut 2 labels. One is in Whisper White with the stamped border and sentiment. The other is in Melon Mambo. I've shown you how I cut it so I can make a mat that is a little larger than the Whisper White and will thus lift the sentiment piece from the card.

10. Once you have cut the Melon Mambo label, adhere them to the Whisper White label as shown above. This will give you a lovely little Melon Mambo border around your sentiment. Place some Dimensionals on the back of your sentiment piece.

11. Adhere your sentiment piece to the ribbon where desired.

12. Lastly I tied a bow with the Melon Mambo Grosgrain ribbon and adhered it to the top of the card ensuring it was centred on the ribbon.

Your card is finished. Now you can use this for your Valentine or a loved one. Use different stamp sets and colours to make a different card. It's a really easy technique. I hope you enjoyed this first Tutorial Tuesday for 2012.

Sketch Saturday Upgrade

On Saturday, I shared a basic scrap page layout using the sketch from Sunny Challenges and Creations. The original layout appears below.

I spent a bit of time today, embellishing the page. I've used scraps of designer series papers and a Sizzix Flower die to cut some flowers. The flowers come in 3 sizes, so I have layered them on top of each other after using my bone folder to break down the fibres a bit and curl the petals up. I think you can see in the picture below, what I mean.

I've just layered them together with a bit of glue and added a pearl in the centre of each flower.
I mage the sentiment piece by using a scrap of Whisper White and Early Espresso ink. Perfectly Penned is a great set for sentiments and I used a sponge dauber to ink around the sentiment piece. The square punch comes in handy to punch out the little 'V' bit on the end. Add some dimensionals, use your bone folder to break up the fivres a bit so the piece will 'wave', adhere to the page and you're done.

I'm starting something new on my blog today - Sketch Saturday. I will share a sketch with you and then make a layout and a card.

Now I will use various products in the layout and then use the left over products and maybe a few extra bits to make a card. The card won't always follow the sketch. Now the important thing to remember about a sketch is that it is there for inspiration and you can interpret it any way you like.

1. Now for my first Sketch Saturday, I have Vicky from Sunny Challenges and Creations, to thank for the sketch this week. At Sunny Challenges and Creations they have a weekly challenge and this past week's challenge was a sketch and colour combination. the colours you could use were Pink Pirouette and Early Espresso with a neutral colour as well if needed. Below, you can see Vicky's sketch.

2. Using this sketch, I came up with the layout below. My goodness that cake looks good enough to eat. I chose to use the Designer Series Paper Stacks to satisfy the colour challenge part of the sketch and I layered it all on Whisper White. I've used the large circle and scallop punches for the embellishment along with Pink Pirouette and Early Espresso ink and the Vintage Vogue stamp set. I also decided to mat the middle photo on Early Espresso card. A quick, easy layout with room for my daughter to do her journalling.

3. Make a card. I used product left over from the layout to make the card and added some ribbon as the embellishment. I've flipped the designer series paper over, to get a different effect from the layout. Both circular embellishments I have used the flower from the stamp set and pink pirouette ink to stamp a background before over stamping the letter in Early Espresso. Both embellishments have dimensionals under then to help them 'pop from the page. With the card I have only used the scallop circle punch and set the 2 scalloped circles off centre so that the valley of one had the mountain of the other behind it. All I need to do is fancy up the inside of the card and I'm done.

Tips and Ideas

I have some more tips to share with you so hopefully your crafting budget will go a little further.

Look after your stamps by always cleaning them after each use.When you have a badly stained stamp, don't bin it - restore it and remove the stains with a mix of baking soda and a little hot water applied gently with a toothbrush. Stampin' Up!'s® Stampin' Mist spray is designed especially for your rubber stamps. It not only cleans but conditions the rubber also. You shouldn't use a toothbrush for normal everyday cleaning, use Stampin' Up!'s® Stampin' Scrub pad which is gentle on your stamps and you can clean and dry with the one product.
To cahieve an aged look for an image, try using paper that has been tea-dyed using a tea bag. Look at any packaging that you may normally throw in the recycling bin. You'd be surprised how many different things you have in the kitchen.
If you're cutting a character or shape that has lots of small elements, rather than cutting each time from different coloured card stock, just cut it once from white card stock and colour it using Stampin' Write Markers, Water Colour Crayons or Pencils used with an Aqua Brush.
When using chalk on cards they will only need fixing with hairspray if the area is large and may easily smudge, or if the chalked area is to have something stuck to it. Did you know that if you make a mistake when colouring with chalk you can erase it. After about 24 hours the chalk is permanent and can't be erased.
You don't need to use ready-printed tea bag tiles. Create your own from pretty Designer Series paper using the large square punch. If you use the Scallop Square punch this will add interest to your finished project
In tea-bag folding if all your tiles don't quite match up in the centre, hide it with a brad or button.
Rounding the corners of your card and matts is one of the easiest ways to liven them up, especially if you own a corner rounder punch

Bargello Technique

I joined a swap which incorporated this technique into a card. Now as a patch worker I recall thinking I would never try this technique as it looked too fiddly and time consuming. I'm happy to report that even with paper, I was right :) However, don't let me turn you off the technique. I will try it again but when I have more time. I feel I needed to choose a wider variety of paper and perhaps narrower strips to achieve a better look.

Supplies:
Patience and accuracy
Designer Series Paper Stack - Brights - Rich Razzleberry and Tempting Turquoise
Big Shot - Scallop Circles #2
Punches - Large Oval and decorative label
Ink - Rich Razzleberry
Ribbon - Tempting Turquoise Grosgrain
This technique requires accuracy in cutting to ensure it all fits together properly. Decide how wide you want your strips and cut them all the same width. Your horizontal cuts can vary, just so long as each row is the same width. Then just fiddle with the pattern until you get something you like.Now a trick I picked up when I was doing patchwork was to use a door peep hole to look through at your pattern. This way you can see any glaring errors in colour and pattern make up before you stick it all down. Unfortunately, I couldn't find my peep hole that I use to use. When you have something you like, adhere it to some paper or light card stock. make sure you adhere it well so that if you decide to cut your background into a shape, all the pieces stay on where they're suppose to be.
I decided to use the Scallop Circle die and cut the background out and then layed it on the card base at an angle, just for added interest.

Masterboard Technique

This is an interesting technique that I haven't previously tried. However, it's given me a load of ideas so I'm sure I'll be playing with it again. The masterboard technique is creating a collage starting with a plain piece of card stock and layering it with stamped words and images. Once you’ve made your masterboard, you cut it up to use as backgrounds for greeting cards. Use different colors of card stock, different greetings and embellishments and you can make a variety of unique and beautiful cards.

Supplies:
Stamp Sets - Medallion, Parlor Prints and Established Elegance
Ink - Tangerine Tango, Marina Mist and Early Espresso
Card - Basic Black and Whisper White
Ribbon - Basic Black tafetta
Method:
I started out with a piece of Whisper White and used the Tangerine Tango and Parlor Prints and Medallion stamp sets to stamp the background. I then used the Established Elegance stamp set and Early Espresso to randomly stamp images over the top of the background. Lastly I used Marina mist to stamp some wording and images. My next step was to cut the 1" squares to make inchies and then adhered them to the black card stock. Make sure you number the inchies so you know which order to adhere them to the card. I added a bit of ribbon and put it all together and then I had my first masterboard card.

I treated the inside too by ink distressing around the edges with marina mist and choosing a couple of stamps from Established Elegance to stamp inside to add some interest.
It's an easy technique and one I'll try again.

Ten Tips To Help You Be Thrifty

I've decided this year, that every now and then I'll share some useful tips with you. We all want to spend our crafting budget wisely and I hope by sharing these tips you can make your craft budget go just a bit further.

Computer generated or rub-on messages or sentiments are perfect for dimensional cards as they won't add depth or bulk, allowing your design to neatly fold
To avoid warping your multi-fold blanks when applying thick layers of crystal effects to layered elements, temporarily attach them to a cutting mat or thick board> Once dry, attach the elements to your card.
When making slider cards, you can secure the folded paper panels with double sided tape, however sewing is better as it won't cause the chipboard to stick when in motion.
Haven't got a sewing machine, don't worry you may pick up one at a garage sale or wait for some of the dollar shops to have the little craft sewing machines for sale. If all else fails, ask a friend.
If you have a heavy embellishment, putting a panel on the back of the card blank will prevent it falling over.
Don't throw away scraps! Patchwork is a great way to recycle leftover pieces of paper too small to use elsewhere or use it to paper piece a card.
Shape your sentiment stamps to fit. Most unmounted stamps are made from pliable material that you can twist so your words form circles or wiggly lines before placing them on your acrylic block.
If your unmounted stamp starts to lose its 'cling', rinse it in water and leave to dry naturally - the cling will be restored.
If you don't have the right colour button, cover any button with VersaMark, and emboss with your chosen colour of embossing powder.

Pink Theme for Valentine's Day

One of the groups I belong to has monthly swaps. The swaps for January included some interesting twists. We need to make a card with a pink theme leading up to valentine's Day. Here is my contribution for my partner.

I love my Stamp-a-majig. It makes life so easy when wanting to get a stamp in a particular spot. I stamped with the Island Indigo first and waited for it to dry. I wiped over the card surface with the embossing buddy (if you don't have one of these and like to emboss, you need to get one and notice the difference in your embossing). I then stamped using Versamark and embossed with the Melon Mambo. I made the sentiment piece and decided bottom left side was good for that. I tied the ribbon in a big bow and tied Baker's Twine around the centre of the ribbon and added the button and tied a knot. So easy.
I think it fits the theme well. Pop back in a couple of days for another share.

For this invitation I printed the wording out in a square and matted it as you can see. I then added about 1.5cm all round to the square I cut for the outside enclosure. You need this because of the matting - it takes up more room than you think. By making the 'envelope' a bit bigger, the completed piece looks far better. I used a Scor-Pal to score the sides of the diamond and then put each triangle through the Big Shot with the Textured impressions Folder. You can actually line up the scored line with the bottom of the Textured folder which makes it look much neater and quite professional. Make sure you adhere the invitation square so it is equidistant all round.

The belly band is made from card for the Island Indigo, Whisper White and brushed Silver. If I was making this again I'd make the belly band wider so I could use the satin ribbon as I think the satin looks much nicer than the tafetta ribbon. So for the bow it's just 3 different sized loops adhered to the belly band with red Sticky Strip - I didn't want it falling apart :). Then I just added a pearl to finish it off.

So this is the last of my wedding stationary ideas for the time being.

Sketch Challenge Card

Now my card is just a simple one but shows how you can use your dies and punches for different effects.

Supplies:

Punch - Lace Ribbon Border

Big Shot - Perfect Pennants

Stamp set - Share a cup

Card - Whisper White, Melon Mambo, Elegant Eggplant and Old Olive

Ink - Elegant Eggplant

When you purchase products, always think about what uses you can get out of them. The Lace Ribbon Border punch can be used instead of ribbon. Try placing a thin strip of card down its centre for a different effect. Place a coloured strip of card behind it or you could cut out individual flowers to use on your project.

The Perfect Pennants die is usually used to make 3D projects. Look at your dies carefully and see how many other uses you can get out of them. Using it this way, it can be a doily or cut it in half to give you a semi circle to use on a project or punch a circle of other coloured card and mount it in the middle or how about punching a circle out of the centre and using it as a frame.

So, don't forget when you're buying supplies to ensure you can get many uses from the product. All Stampin' Up!® products are designed to team together.

Wedding Stationary Ideas

Well here is another set of wedding ideas. I've actually made both the 'envelopes' for this set.

I'll run through this like a tutorial but leave sizes up to you as it really depends on what you want on the invitation and how you print it, that determies the sizing for all pieces.

Supplies:

Card - Whisper White, Island indigo (In Colour 2012-2013), Brushed Silver

Big Shot, Vintage Wallpaper Textured Impressions Folder

Ribbon - 5/8" Satin - Whisper White and 3/8" (1 cm) Ruffled Ribbon - Island indigo

Adhesive - Red Sticky Strip and Snail Adhesive

All products listed above are Stampin' Up!®

Method:

Firstly I worked out the wording on the invitation and fiddled with fonts and spacing. When I was happy with that I printed it on Whisper White card stock which I put through my laser printer.

Then I matted it on Brushed Silver, then Whisper White again and lastly on the Island Indigo.

The next step was to make the envelope for the invitation. I measured the width of the completed invitation and added 2cm, so it would slide in and out easily when made up. I added an extra 1cm to the front panel only I scored 1cm in from the edge of the front as these make the bits you fold in to keep the sides of the envelope closed. Now for the back, I actually added 4cm extra. Score at 3cm from top edge as this forms the flap which folds down over the front. (I hope this makes sense:))

Run the front of the envelope through the Big Shot with your favourite Textured Impressions Folder. I used the negative side but you choose which way you want to do it.

Add sticky strip to the 2 x 1cm flaps and adhere to the inside of the envelope sticking the front to the back.

To make your ribbon 'belly band' embellishment, you need to measure right around your envelope and I added 2cm for lap over. I actually made the belly band on the envelope so I was sure it would fit. Don't pull the ribbon too tight or you won't be able to get the belly band on or off easily. Now adhere the 2 ends together on the front of the envelope. To make the bows just make 2 loops of different sizes adhering them together. Now take you Island indigo ribbon and make another ribbon loop and adher to the white satin ribbon - see photo. To keep it all together, I added a brad in the centre. By having the raw edges in the front, you're actually hiding the join and making the join stronger with the brad.

The R.S.V.P. card was made in the same way as the invitation with ribbon attached with a staple which is covered by a pearl. I tried using the slot punch but there were too many thicknesses, so I would probably use the slot punch if I made this card again but I'd punch each layer at a time. I'd also probably make the card larger, just a bit smaller than the invitation itself. This would make it better for return postage.

The above piece is for the Wishing Well/Gift Registry card and as it speaks of flowers I decided to go with a flower bloom die cuts and adhered then together and made the envelope to fit. I printed the verse onto Whisper White Card and then placed the die carefully so i wouldn't loose any letters - it was a tight fit. Then I cut the other 2 pieces as needed. If I made this again, I'd make the blooms after the verse bloom, smaller, thus reducing the overall size of the piece. The envelope was made similar to the one above. Don't do what I did:) I made the envelope without checking if it would fit inside the invitation envelope - it didn't so there was a quick re-make of the envelope so it would fit. I've just added a bit of double sided tape under the fold of the envelope so once the money is placed inside, the envelope can be sealed. You could use Red Sticky Strip to get the same closure.

Valentine's idea

here's my latest creation. I think you'll smile when I tell you where I got the template for this little box. Looks great doesn't it? I think the red satin ribbon just tops it off too.

Supplies:

Template

Scissors

Scoring tool

Adhesive - red sticky strip

Ribbon - 5/8" Real Red Satin

Paper - Timeless Portrait DSP

Method:

Find something you can use as a template. In my case i used the box from Schick lady razor blades :) Trace your template on to your chosen paper

Work out where you need to put the red sticky strip to hold your little box together

Don't put any adhesive along the top of your box as you need to fill it with goodies for your loved one

When full, tie the handles together with some gorgeous satin ribbon that co-ordinates with your paper.

A quick, easy but lovely looking gift for your loved one or someone you care about.

Wedding Bonbonniere Box

I'm busy making samples of wedding stationary and other items. Here's an idea you could use for bonbonniere.

Wedding Box

I created this as a sample for bonbonniereat a wedding. I just love this Stampin’ Up!® Mocha Morning Specialty Paper.The textures and colours are so rich and lend themselves to many projects.

Supplies:

Card – Very Vanilla; Basic Black andMocha Morning Specialty Paper

Ink – Basic Black

Ribbon – Basic Black Satin 5/8”

Stamps – Marry me

Punch – Decorative Label and HeartBorder

Other – Cutter, Score pal, scissors,adhesive, red sticky tape and magnet closures

Method:

Cut your card/DSP to 8 ½” x 11”

Score on the 11” side at 2”, 5”, 7” and10”

Score on the 8 ½” side at 2” and 7”

Cut on the lines with the freehand Zdrawn on them

Cut out the black parts

Please note this is not drawn to scale

Fold on all other lines and use redsticky strip to assemble your box.

Take a strip of Basic Black card and usea border punch and attach this piece to the wrong side of the top tab.

Adhere 1 of your magnets to near the topopening of your box and attach the 2^nd magnet by using the 1^stmagnet to hold it in place, remove backing so its sticky and close top tab andpress firmly so both magnets are adhered in the correct position.

Now with your box closed, squeeze thetop of the box together and use your fingers to create ‘valley’ folds down eachside of the box

The last step is to make theembellishment. Now I stamped the decorative lable from the stamp set Marry meonto Very Vanilla card. I then used my Stamp-a-ma-jig to stamp the sentiment inthe correct place. Finally I used the Decorative Label punch and punched outthe sentiment. I then used some scraps of basic Black and punched 2 labels outcutting one horizontally and the other vertically and trimming them a bit togive me a mat to place behind the sentiment piece. I tied the ribbon in a bowand adhered to the front of the box just beneath the sentiment.

Now your box is ready to fill for your bonbonniere– a little bag of 5 sugar coated almonds representing health, wealth, happiness,good luck and fertility. This is an old Italian tradition, I understand.

Once you make the first, all the otherswill come together quickly. You could even set up a bit of a production line.

You could use this little box for manyother occasions as well.

Wedding Ideas

Sometime this year my DD and her partner of 6 years will be getting married :) I'm in the process of making some samples of stationery for them to use - invitations, bombonieres, menues etc. So here is my first shares.

DD has a scarf which is the colour she wants featured at the wedding and it's very close to Island Indigo.
Supplies:
Card - Whisper White, Brushed Silver
Ink - Island Indigo, Versamark
Emboss powder - Silver
Ribbon - Island Indigo
Big Shot - Vintage Wall paper; Top Note die; Scallop Envelope; 2 Tags
Stamp Sets - Style beautiful; Baroque Motifs

If I make this card again, I'd do a couple of things differently: I probably wouldn't emboss the Brushed Silver or if I did I'd just partially emboss it so the names can be read easily; and I'd use the larger tag for the RSVP.

Ribbon Organiser Tutorial

I hope you all had a wonderful holiday season with your family and friends and the new year brings you much happiness and joy.
I've had a bit of a break from my blog over the holidays and have almost recovered from my eye surgery - my vision seems to be improving daily :)
I'm going to try and work on a post every day this year - let's see how things go :) Tuesday Tutorials will be back - it's just a day early this week :)

RIBBON ORGANISER TUTORIAL

Do you have a never ending supply of ribbons that are disorganised and just everywhere? That means you probably don't get the most from your ribbons as you spend time looking for just the right one for each project. Well my solution will cost you less that A$4 per colour way. So let's get started:

This photo shows the idea in progress.

Supplies:

Plastic shoe box

Metal ruler

Sharpie

Dowel

Beads to fit on ends of dowel

Paper snips.craft scissors

3/4" circle punch

Ribbons

Patience :)

This is the type of shoe box you need. You can pick them up from dollar shops for a couple of dollars or cheaper if you're lucky.

Method:

Assemble your supplies and remove your box from the packaging. Then give every fold a good crease - just the same as you would if you were making a box from card. I fould the ends were best if I folded them inwards first and then outwards
The boxes I purchased had 2 holes along one edge and this is the edge you need to start with.

Use your metal rule and sharpie to draw a line along the top and bottom edges of the holes. Start at 3cm and finish at 27cm. Draw a line at each end too - this gives you and enclosed rectangle. The lines are cutting lines. I found it easier to start at a hole and used my craft snips to cut the long edges and my paper snips to cut close into the corners and for the ends

Now you need to make the holes for your rod to pass through. Make sure when making your holes, they are made on the flaps at the front of the box, where you cut your slot. Use your 3/4" punch and sharpie and mark at approximately 5cm from the edge and 5 1/2cm from the bottom of the box

Mark with your sharpie. I used a cross. This is the midpoint of the hole you are going to punch. Place your hole punch in position and carefully turn it and the box over and press down hard to punch the shape. You will need a hard surface to do this on and plenty of pressure.

Now use this punched shape as a 'template' to mark your other holes out - one on the side flap and one on the bottom flap

Notice the blue sharpie shape I have drawn on the fron flap. Line this up with your hole punch and punch out as your first punch. Make sure you work on a sturdy hard surface with the punch flat on the table and exert a fair amount of pressure. Do the same on the bottom flap.
Now repeat this step on the other side of the box
Close up one end and thread your dowel rod through and place a bead on the end of the rod. This is to help stop the rod from going through into the box. If it does slip into the box, thr bead will stop the ribbons from coming off.

Now it's time to start threading your ribbon spools on. Now the 1/4" grosgrain rolls will be a very snug fit, but they still work.

Don't hold the end of the rod with the bead on it as it seems to break. Support the rod with your other habd by placing your hand through the slot. This seemed to work well and also helps in spacing the ribbons out.

There is enough room in the back of the box to place your extra ribbon spools if you have any.

The spools can jam up next to each other and then just allow a littl tail to come out of the slit. Anything between the ends and the 3cm portion not cut, is difficult to get the ribbon in and out. I feel the box needs this bit on either end to remain stable at the front. You could try cutting the slot longer but I don't know what affect this will have on the over all design.

The last step is to close up the end and thread the bead on the dowel

My dowel is fairly thin, however you could use thicker dowel and larger beads. I used the 3/4" circle punch as this fits onto the plastic flaps and allows you to punch your holes. The last box I did was a bit bigger and the flaps much larger so I needed to cut the holes for the rod out by hand. It was a bit tedious but it did work.

Anyway I hope you liked my solution to my ribbon organisation. The photo below shows you my 'tower' of ribbon holder shoe boxes.

All ribbons are Stampin' Up!® and I've stored them in their colour families except for Certainly Celery which needed to go in the Neutrals box as I'd run out of room in the Subtles family box.

Tutorial Tuesday - Oh Christmas Tree ...

I've been asked by many people, how I made my little tree. So I've decided to share the tutorial with you. You'll be surprised at how simple it really is. There is no adhesive involved at all.
Recipe:
Green ribbon - Stampin' Up!® of course 12cm lengths
Red ribbon - also Stampin' Up!® - 12 cm lengths (I used Real Red 1/8" (3.2 mm) Taffeta Ribbon & 5/8" (1.6 cm) Satin Ribbon
Pearl head pins
Scissors
Styrofoam Cone

Method:
Cut all ribbon into 12cm lengths
You need enough cuts of ribbon to go around the cone once in a row

Take one end of the ribbon and fold to the centre

Then take the other end and fold it over to the centre but overlapping your first raw edge a bit

Now fold the ribbon so you fold over the centre and form an upside down 'V'

Take 1 pearl head pin and push through the centre of the V - this shows where I placed the pin

This view shows the pin pushed all the way in and ready to go into the Styrofoam cone

By doing it this way you keep the raw edges from showing and it gives the effect of leaves on your tree
Push these pieces into the Styrofoam cone all the way around forming a row. You can use all the same type of ribbon in a row or you can mix up the shades. You need to use the same width of ribbon in a row so your tree stays even all the way up.

When tying your bow, make sure you leave some long ends to drape down over your tree

Note how I have positioned the pin. It goes under the centre section of the bow, thus hiding it.

See how I have pushed it through. When pushed all the way through you can't see the pin head

This view shows the pin when it has been pushed right through and it's ready to go into the top of your tree. Now if you get the angle right, you can make the bow 'stand up' instead of lying flat on top of your tree - as you can see below

Push the pin all the way in

Do the same with your red ribbon, only stick them in randomly on your tree. Do as many as you wish.

Your tree is finished. During the year keep all your off cuts of ribbon for projects such as this. I hope you enjoyed this tutorial.

This is a great way to use up all those little bits you have left over - don't discard them, make a card using them/
I've mounted the compass and anchor embellishments om dimensionals. Now you know the edge of the sheet of dimensionals? Well this type of project is a great way to use up the edge bits - just cut to size and length.

Tutorial Tuesday - Post It Note Holder

I held a workshop on the weekend and the ladies wanted a 'Male' Theme. Now, normally I struggle with this as I guess I feel more comfortable making femine projects. Anyway, flicking through the new Summer Mini Catalogue, I noticed the gorgeous Nautical Expedition Designer Series Paper which teams nicely with Cherry Cobbler, Not Quite Navy, Early Espresso and Basic Gray.

This set of papers is just wonderful for male themed projects. I teamed this designer series paper with the new Baker's Twine and cardstock to produce a number of projects for the ladies to make. I'll share one with you this time and will place the others up on my blog during the week.

NAUTICAL EXPEDITION POST-IT NOTE HOLDER & PEN

Recipe:
Nautical Expedition Designer Series Paper
Cherry Cobbler & White Baker's Twine
Sahara Sand card
Early Espresso card
Vintage Trinkets brad
Multipurpose Liquid Glue
Sticky Strip
Snail adhesive
Stampin' Up!® pen
Big Shot & Textured Impressions Folder of choice - Houndstooth
Post-it-note pad
Method:
Using the Early Espresson card cut to 3 1/4" x 7 1/2"

Score along the long edge at 3 1/4", 3 3/4" and 4 1/4"
Fold so you have on top a valley, mountain and valley fold

Cut the slits for the pen holder at about 1 1/4" and 2 1/4" - the slits need to go from 1 valley fold across the mountain fold to the other valley fold

Once the slits are cut, fold the rectangle for the pen upwards

Place adhesive (sticky strip) under the bottom folds - put this all to one side.
Front cover:
Cut the Sahara Sand card just slightly smaller than the front cover of the holder
Run the Sahara Sand through the Big Shot with your chosen folder
Cut a strip of the Nautical Expedition DSP and adher to one side of the Sahara Sand using snail adhesive
Wrap the Baker's Twine around the card twice and tie a knot
Put the Antique brad through the centre of the knot of Baker's Twine
Assemble:
Use the Multipurpose Liquid Glue to adhere your 'cover' piece of Sahara Sand etc to the Early Espresso card on the front of your holder. I find this is the best or sticky strip when working with embossed surfaces.
Use sticky strip on the back of the post-it note and adhere to the insdie of the holder
Slide the pen through the pen holder section
Sit back and admire your handiwork.

STAMPING & SCRAPPIN' CLUB

Friday (9th December 2011) is the last of my Club nights for the year. I have some extra projects for you to do, if you'd like. I'll share them here with you and you can let me know if you'd like to do them.
PROJECT 1 - RIBBON CHRISTMAS TREE

This cute little tree looks complicated but is quite easy to make. It just takes a little patience and time. If you's like to make this tree, please let me know by Wednesday (7/12/11) by 5pm as I have to buy the Styrofoam cone for it and some pearl head pins. Cost is $10 (on top of your club fee)

PROJECT 2 - STAMPING ON CANDLES

You can learn to stamp on a candle, similar to this. Yours will be a bit shorter as the taller ones seem to be hard to get at present. Your candle will look stunning no matter what the size.
